Q&A:

Rose asked How can I improve night vision?

I can see really well during the night, but when I drive at night my eyesight is really weak especially when I drive in areas that don’t have light. Is there anything I can do to naturally improve night vision? I know if I go to the eye doctor he is just going to want to prescribe me glasses. But I don’t need glasses since I can see very well during the day. I just need to know if there are any vitamins that I can take?

And got the following answer:

Vitamin A might help night vision (but only if lack of vitamin A is the cause). Unless you diet is really bad, this is unlikely.

Quite often, when somebody’s vision is starting to go bad, it shows up in the dark first. Because, in the daytime, when it is bright, your pupils are constricted and because of the way light propagates through small holes, it eliminates a lot of the blur. In the night time, your pupils are wide open and you lose this effect.

So, whether you like it or not, it sounds like glasses might be in your future.

Krisna asked I would like to buy a night driving spectacle?

Can anyone recommends me a good night vision driving glass which is available in India. Glass should give at least a protection from the headlight of vehicle coming opposite direction.

It will be really helpful if you can provide website address of the manufacturer.

And got the following answer:

mndmth asked How does the night vision glass work?

In the abscence of light and in total dark how does the night vision glasses work.?

And got the following answer:

There are different technologies.

Infra-red uses a sensor that changes detected infra-radiation energy into a visible image. There does not have to be visible light – but there has to be objects with differing infra-red signatures to see an image.

Photo-multiplier type night vision converts very small light input, converts it to an electrical signal and multiplies the signal through a cascading sequence of power increases so that the image brightness is sufficient to be visible to a viewer. The multiplied electrical signal is converted to a visible image for the viewer.

So yes, there does have to be light or infra-red radiation present, depending on the technology. The amount of light necessary is not great – I do not know whether the infra-red imagers also use a photo-multiplying-type technology or not.

James Doakes asked How do you make a regular red headlight into a night vision goggle looking thing?

I have one of those flashlight things that strap onto your head with red LED’s in it and i want to make it look like im wearing one of those night vision goggles from splinter cell so is there any way i could adjust it or something?

And got the following answer:

take the glass out

granito diaz asked What is best for photophobia when using a computer: “night vision glasses for driving at night”, or gunnar?

Do “night vision glasses” do any help or is just a color, compared to gunnar glasses which have XXI century technology?

And got the following answer:

If glare is your problem, I would suggest getting an anti-reflective coating for your lenses. This usually costs between 50 and 90 dollars. I would not suggest gunnar solely for computer use.

Craig Poling Junior asked Are there any night vision goggles that can fit over glasses?

Hey guys. I’m looking for some Night vision goggles or scopes that could fit over my glasses. I take part in the airsoft games and I’ll be needing something like that. If i could afford prescrition contact lenses then I’d get some, but my finaces are pretty tight. I could probably get a scope to fit over my goggles, which wrap over my glasses, but I’d like any idea on what would be best. Any product suggestions and/or advice is welcome.

Ps. I learned just now that because of my prescription, contact lenses are outta the question ’cause they cannot be made for my eyes, my prescription is too strong for contacts to be made.

And got the following answer:

No.

But most NVD;s can still be used with glasses. There will be some light that leaks out. Give me an idea of price range so I can recommend different units? Do you want a unit that has 1x magnification or do you want one with ‘some’ magnification?

Connor asked How do you make homemade night vision goggles?

Is there a way to make homemade night vision goggles? If so will someone please attach a link to some schematics or tell me how to do it?
Please Respond.
(PS:I’m not very smart in the engineering talk, so will you please dumb it down? Thank you!)

And got the following answer:

It’s easy! I actually have one that I made, and it’s pretty cool, although I made it out of a webcam, so now I look like a zombie whenever I do video-calls :(.

Basically, most webcams have the ability to see infrared light, but they have a filter that blocks it. (because seeing infrared makes everything look more white, because the webcam sees infrared light as white if you take off the filter.) To take off the filter, I just opened up the webcam, and took of the lens assembly. Then you will see what looks like a small, clear piece of glass. Take it out. If you look at it closely it should have a kind of rainbow reflection. They’re pretty cool. Then put the camera together, and turn off the lights. You will notice that if you have a tv remote or other IR source, you will be able to see in the dark, while everyone else can’t. This would be an active infrared camera. You will have to find a way to display what the webcam sees on a set of goggles. I’m sure a lot of camera’s also have this infrared filter in them, so maybe one of those would be more useful.
