Q&A:

perryinjax asked What is the difference between an AR10 and an AR15 rifle?

I have seen for sale an ArmaLite AR-10T
http://www.gundealeronline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=10TN
and it looks very similar to an AR15 to me.
Is the difference that the first is chambered for 308 Win. and the AR15 is .223?
Is that the only difference between the AR10 and the AR15?
Also….on the ArmaLite AR-10T…… What does the “T” signify?
Instead of just saying “ArmaLite AR-10″…why put the “T” on the end to make it be “ArmaLite AR-10T” ?
Please tell me the difference between these three rifles. The AR-10, AR-10T, and the AR-15.
Thank you,
Perry in FL

And got the following answer:

the 1st ar10s was used by Portugal military the T is a after market ploy to make some politicians happy the ar-15 is the civilian version of the m16 the ar10 was a attempt at marketing a 308 in-the ar family armalite type of rifles if you can find a early make of one they are worth more than your colts ar15 which is a 223 both are good rifles depending on the make you can switch the uppers

Justin asked New Jersey Firearms ID – How can you own more than three handguns at a time?

In New Jersey – how can you own more than three handguns if the firearms ID only lets you buy 1 per month and only lasts three months? Also, is there another kind of permit that you can receive that lets you buy an unending amount of firearms (handguns)? Also, what are the restrictions on AR’s and why is it that I see some available for sale when it seems like they are illegal here.

How can I get permission to own more than three handguns at a time

And got the following answer:

Hello Justin!

In NJ, you CAN own more than three handguns at a time. When you obtain a pistol purchase permit from your local police or the local NJSP barracks, that permit is good to make the initial purchase for 90 days. If you do not make the purchase within 90 days, and you have not waited until the permit has expired, you can seek another 90 day extension of that permit, otherwise you must re-apply for another pistol purchase permit. Once you have obtained the permit, and purchased the pistol within the requisite 90 days, that permit is your legal pistol registration form.

There is absolutely no way of obtaining a permit to purchase an unlimited number of handguns. You must seek a new permit for every handgun you wish to purchase. The last time I acquired a pistol permit (c, 1998), you still faced an automatic denial if you stated you wanted the handgun for self defense … the state’s constitution does not grant it’s residents the constitutional right to self defense … and you face severe punishment if you do defend yourself if you have not exhausted all avenues of flight to avoid conflict.

Basically, you gain the right to own more than three handguns at a time when you apply and obtain the permit to purchase. The pistol permit you get is the “permit to purchase and register”, not a “permit to possess”. As much as the state may like the idea of the method of revenue production, you do not have to run out every 90 days to renew your permit in order to legally own a handgun.

With respect to AR-type rifles … the last I heard, anything that is marked “AR15” is illegal, but you can purchase (legally) a post-ban XM-15 (from Bushmaster), the DPMS or Eagle Arms equivalent, or a Colt Match Target! You can not currently purchase any new AR-style rifle that has a bayonet lug, a flash suppressor, and a protruding pistol grip.

MAX asked What is the average price for a decent AR-15?

I live in Utah if that makes any difference. Also, do you recommend any web sites?

And got the following answer:

i bought my colt m4 with 3 magpul pmags, a quad fore rail, two front grips, tactical sling, red dot sight, and streamlight tlr3 light for around 1200.00, colt is good quality but is pretty steeply priced, there are several brands that are decently priced (750-800) range, dpms is one type, olympic arms, bushmaster, or windham weaponry( formerly bushmaster before remington bought them out, same old co., new name lol) these guys all produce good quality ar15 rifles, and if new isnt a big deal you can check out armslist.com, theyre a state by state site that handles personal and dealer sales, considering christmas is here and the economy sucks you could probably find one for the 450-600 range, hopefully this helps in your search, have a good thanksgiving!

leonard asked I am buying 2 ar15 rifles, one for my wife and one for me.Does my wife have to me or c to the store 2w?

go with me or can I buy them as long as i have her I.D.My wife has had recent surgery and there is a sale on the sand wesson ar 15s as well as the colts and bushmasters. We both have our passports, hunting licenses.and drivers licenses?

And got the following answer:

Most limits on weapons apply to handguns (though, I’m most familiar with Virginia laws). You should be able to purchase two rifles in the same day, and you shouldn’t need your wife’s info to do so.

For more thorough information, search “your state, gun purchase, laws”.

Best wishes.

Dylan asked Are M4 Carbines for sale to civilians, and if not, what similar rifles are?

I want to join the Marines more than anything, so I want to buy something similar to what I would be using there to get some practice.

And got the following answer:

Marines don’t use the M4 generally… That’s mostly the Army.

Marines still use M16A2s sometimes, but from my understanding have mostly upgraded to the M16A4. It’s a flat-top M16A2. This goes back to their whole marksmanship philosophy… Every man a rifleman. They want that longer barrel.

Here’s what you’ll need… This will replicate an M16A4 pretty closely.

Of course, you’ll need some ammo… This is cheap, but a good rifle will shoot it fine. Perfect for just starting out… You can get nicer ammo later.

You’ll need CLP to clean and lubricate your rifle… It’s a couple bucks at WalMart. Just keep the working parts oiled, and wipe the residue off after a range trip. For cleaning the bore, I’d just get a bore snake. A chrome-lined bore isn’t match-grade… No sense in spending a lot of effort getting it spotless. (I actually don’t clean chrome lined barrels until accuracy starts to suffer… It’s not like it’s going to rust or anything… You risk damage to the rifle’s crown every time you pull something through the bore. That will mess up accuracy a lot worse than a little fowling.)

The basic package- Rifle and ammo

If you’re feeling really spendy… Grab the optics, too.

I wouldn’t say an AR15 needs much maintenance…. As long as you keep it oiled, they can run pretty well without ever being cleaned. (There are photographs out there of a guy who’s build has 11,000 rounds through it with only oil…. 11,000 rounds is where you start having some parts wear out.)

Pat Rogers has an article in SWAT where he had a Colt 6940 (very similar to an M4) that had in excess of 17,000 rounds without significant cleaning. He stopped the test because a bad load blew up the rifle.
