Before You Buy A M4 or AR-15 Know Your Facts

Many companies selling M4 and AR variants today try to sell a carbine or rifle that may be suitable for plinking cans, shooting gophers etc. but will not hol…

Q&A:

asked Can I assemble a RRA upper with another manufacturers stripped lower receiver?

Example: RRA complete A4 rifle kit with another stripped, forged lower receiver (Stag/Bushmaster etc.)

And got the following answer:

Obviously. The AR-15 platform is probably the most interchangeable weapons systems in history. They are manufactured with tolerances close enough to take any mix of uppers on any standard lower receiver. They even have a .50 Caliber upper that will fit on any AR-15 lower although I’d make sure the buttstock was padded very well and not a standard plastic or metal stock.

I have an old Colt HBAR-A2 (CMP) with a drilled forward hole in the lower receiver that takes a tight fitting pin with a retention screw rather than the typical retained sliding pin. They even sell adapters/spacers/pins for other upper receivers for anyone who has this type of accurized lower receiver.

Good Luck!

You are no match for my power asked Is there any substitute for upper receiver vice blocks to torque down ar barrels?

i’m halfway through my first build (complete lower) and i’m pretty set on a midwest industries billet upper because they’re local, in stock, and i’m also going with an MI rail. However it’s thicker than normal uppers and the brownells clam shell vise block also warns not use on billet uppers. how would i go about securing the receiver when i put my barrel on?

And got the following answer:

This is a good question for Midwest customer support.

If this is a flat top – it might fit in the receiver blocks. Before armorer blocks were wide spead people used sheets of leather with rags stuffed around the handle to hold the older A1 and A2 receivers. If you are careful, very careful and take your time – yeah, you could probably seat a barrel and get it to 35ftlbs of torgue. But here’s the deal – sometimes the barrel nut does not properly align, and, this means you have to remove the whole barrel and start over. Eventually it will go. I’ve had some barrels where it’s taken 12 or more tries and I ended going well past 35ftlbs to properly set it – one time I hit 90ft pounds. Although this might sound excessive…… its tons better than the barrels I have removed where the guy who built it settled for 17ftlbs. That particular rifle was a factory Colt that shot just fine.

Leather sheets/pieces are your friend. You cant just wrap it in rags – the metal will cut through the material and this will leave a deep ding or mark on the finish you cant easily remove.

asked Who manufactures the Marine Corps M16a4/M16 recievers?

I’m building an AR15 to be a Marine Corps clone of the M16A4. I already bought a Bushmaster 20” A3 flattop upper receiver and have the Knights Armament M5 ras rail, and the Trijicon TA31RCO-A4 with the Killflash and i have a Surefire M961XM07 weapon light. Now all i need to know is the manufacturer of the lower receiver of the LOWER RECEIVER. Colt? Bushmaster? help!! thanks!

And got the following answer:

Colt

ProllyNeedHelp asked What upper receiver and barrel assembly parts are best compatible with a bushmaster lower receiver?

i recently got a bushmaster lower receiver assembly, complete with the single match trigger and six position stock. I was wondering if there are any upper pieces that are cheaper that will still be compatible with the lower. If sticking with bushmaster parts is best i’d like to know.
Its for an AR 15… if that isnt obvious

And got the following answer:

AR-15 parts are generally manufactured within tolerances so that they will work together easily. However, stay away from Colt unless you have a Colt lower as the takedown pin holes are slightly larger than other manufacturers. Otherwise, most uppers should work just fine, as long as they are mil-spec.

Jerard asked two build an ar-15, do the upper and lower reveivers have to be made by the same manufacturer?

my uncles friend has a complete lower receiver made by stag for $75.do i have to buy a stage upper to or would and brand work e.g., bushmaster, rockriver, etc?

And got the following answer:

Nope any one will work, with the exception of some Colt lowers. Some have a few screwy things like different pin sizes.

Other than that everything should be modualar.
