African Leaders: No One Country Can Stop Elephant Poaching : Parallels : NPR

Satao was a 45-year-old Kenyan elephant with tusks so long they brushed the ground. Poachers killed him in June with a poisoned arrow. African leaders gathered in Washington said there needs to be better cooperation on the continent to prevent poaching.

– A rash of copper thefts in DeKalb County has school officials putting back up plans in place for the start of school Monday. According to DeKalb County Police, thieves have targeted 16 schools in the last few weeks costing the school district more than $800,000 in damage. DeKalb County Police have now partnered with school officials to try and stop these thieves from doing any more damage. They announced the joint effort at a news conference Wednesday morning at Stephenson Middle School, one of the schools targeted. School officials say the thieves stole copper from the air conditioning units at the school. DeKalb County Police will use their chopper equipped with infrared imaging and night vision along with extra patrols to try and catch those responsible. DeKalb’s school superintendent says this has impacted the school district significantly, but they were able to repair the damage at all schools before students return Monday.

Tsavo Trust hide caption itoggle caption Tsavo Trust The killing, by poisoned arrow, of a 45-year-old elephant named Satao this June hit Kenya particularly hard. Not just because Satao had lived so long, with tusks so grand they brushed the grass where he walked. But also because Satao was under almost 24-hour watch by Kenyan game rangers to protect him from poachers.

Philly legend Rodgers entering hoops Hall

And he did not stop being a great player when he became a territorial pick of the old Philadelphia Warriors. He scored 10,415 points and had 6,917 assists in 892 NBA games. He led the league with 825 assists in 1962-63 and 908 in 1966-67. He was a four-time All Star. “[Bob] Cousy was the big man at the time, but there are still a lot of people that think Guy was at least the equal of Cousy,” Scheuer said. Like so many in the city, Scheuer has been wondering why Rodgers wasn’t voted in the Hall years ago. “I’d just about given up,” Scheuer said.
