Former police chief Scott Whitehead wins seat on North Plains City Council

Free Christmas dinner to be served in Salem A free Christmas Day dinner will be served at the Salem Knights of Columbus, 37 Main St., from noon to 3 p.m. Reservations must be made by Dec. 18. Organizer David Thompson said the event is made possible with the blessings of Father John, pastor of Saints Mary and Joseph Parish, the Salem Knights of Columbus and the Salem Christmas Fund. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants shared ideas on what would improve the city and keep young professionals here. As these ideas were shared, participants were asked to write the ideas on sticky notes and hand them to Affholter, who attached the papers to a large sheet on the wall. Some ideas to make the city more vibrant included a skate park, an ice rink and a sled run at the Field of Dreams and a sushi restaurant or a destination that would make Hillsdale a place to come to. Mary Wolfram, of the Economic Development Commission, said there seemed to be a gap between college-age students and those staying in Hillsdale to raise their families. “We need to ask what would keep young professionals here,” Wolfram said. Wolfram said interactive cultural events would be advisable.
