Air New Zealand Begins Charter Flights to Antarctica

Air New Zealand is planning a demonstration flight to Antarctica next month. The airline will fly one of its Boeing 767-300s from Auckland to an ice runway near McMurdo Station as part of a proving flight to determine the feasibility of using the jumbo jet to fly scientists and other support personnel to the chilly continent.

Q&A:

Bob Marten asked Which LED for Night Vision?

I have the Night vision goggles from the Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 box. It has an ok range but not the best. I was wondering if I could make a better version of this setup, Or improve with an IR LED array. I searched on Ebay for these LED’s I found lots however they are at different wavelengths example 840nm, 850nm, 940nm and 950nm. Which would provide a longer distance of view with a reasonable sized array say 24 LED’s running any voltage required. Is there a better alternative for distance with IR LED. Or even a better Night vision setup. Ps, (Don’t tell me to go buy a FLIR I cannot buy one in canada due to being classed as fire arm Scopes. I can’t drive it accross the border and not to mention they cost 4-5 grand.)
Also are the cheap 100 LED’s for $13 no good ? or are they just fine. I am aware they all give off a small red glow, The less glow the better this is for airsoft in total darkness in a field / Urban. I was thinking getting a clear bouncy ball hollowing it out filling it with LED’s faceing outwords battery in the middle and clear padding all around. (IR illumination grenade ?)

And got the following answer:

You answered your own question. Some IR LED’s will give off a very low
glow in the lower spectrum looking blue, purple or a deep red. This glow
is low enough to avoid detection at a distance,

kendall a asked How do I make night vision goggles step by step?

And got the following answer:

OK, here we go:
1) Go to Canada and dig up some cesium
2) Go to China to mine the antimony
3) Make the phosphor up from cesium-antimony-potassium etc.
4) – oh, heck – google “night vision goggles” and buy one.

Really, they are very complex. Better off buying something.

Jeff asked Are night vision Goggles illegal in Canada?

I have a good idea for a tech design project. I want to make home made night vision goggles out of 20 or so IR LEDS and a small camera. (Yes I know the range is crap and all that this is for marks, I dont care if it actually is usefull)
But I heard its illegal to have or make IR goggles or Night Vision Goggles in Canada. Is this true??

And got the following answer:

As far as I know they are legal in Canada, and USA (as long as you don’t attach them to a rifle, or use them for illegal activities).

Don’t trust everything you “heard” ; do your own research.

By the way, there is a BIG difference between the professional models ($$$ thousands), and the “cheap” toy-like models.

Leon asked What are some games in Canada?

I’ve been wondering about that for a while now and I can’t find anything on search engines. What are some non-famous, non-actual-sport, kid games played in Canada? Just name it and explain how to play, please.

And got the following answer:

Well son, as you may know, Canada is a unique country with a very unique climate and environs, and this shapes the past-times that we engage in. For example, the majority Canadian towns are so isolated that they don’t have the same sort of plumbing that Americans are used to. As a result, most people have outhouses (heated, don’t worry!) rather than indoor washrooms and kids, being kids, often engage in the age-old tradition of outhouse tipping, where a small group of children work together to topple over an outhouse, usually when it’s occupied.

Another fun game is called Beaver Ball. Many Americans are unaware of how friendly and sociable beavers actually are. Since most Canadian towns are built around a river or lake, beavers have grown used to the presence of humans, and during the winter, both children and beavers will engage in a soccer-like game played with a tennis-ball on frozen water.

A third game that I remember fondly from my youth is a variation on hide-and-seek. Because Canada is so far north, in mid-winter we have a period of darkness that lasts for about 2 weeks (like in the move “30 Days of Night” but we’re not far enough north for a full month of darkness). It gets very dark, with only the light of the moon and stars, and with the icy roads and unusual animal behavior, it’s unsafe to drive, so schools and businesses close down during the “Canadark”. Children like to use this time to play a sort of “ultra” hide and seek, Hiders hiding in anything from purpose-built shacks to camouflaged tents, and Seekers armed with small-calibre firearms and night-vision goggles. Since the Canadark lasts for around 14 days, children love to play this game for days at a time.

I hope this helps. It’s sure brought back some fun memories for me!!!
