Night Vision Explained

Spy movies are often the first thing that comes to mind when people think about or discuss night vision technology. Do they actually work, or are they another form of moviemaking magic? In case you were wondering, the technology is very real and very effective. The standard set of night vision goggles will allow you to see a person standing 200 yards away on a cloudy, moonless night. Impressive, isn?t it?

There are two different types of night vision technology. The first works on the principle of image enhancement. It works by collecting the minute amount of light contained in darkness, and amplifying it to the point where objects can be viewed. It even collects light from the lower end of the infrared light spectrum, which is generally imperceptible to the human eye.

The other way that night vision technology works is through a process known as thermal imaging. This process works by capturing the upper end of the infrared light spectrum. This part of the light spectrum is emitted in the form of heat, as opposed to light as we might recognize it. The warmer an object is the higher amount of this light is emitted.

There are some similar components in both night vision systems. Each of these systems is comprised of optics, some form of signal processing, and a viewing monitor. Image enhancement seems to be the prevailing technology contained in modern night vision systems. Both systems were developed, originally, for military use. In the United States, there are two classifications for night vision devices. The first is called MILSPEC, which refers to military specifications. The other is COMSPEC, which refers to commercial specifications.

This technology has been incorporated into a number of popular products, and put to use is many different ways. They are generally contained in three distinct categories; scopes, goggles, and cameras. Scopes are generally handheld or mounted on weapons, and are monocular. These are good for short-term viewing from a stationary position. Goggles are worn by the user and are binocular. As they are worn by the user, they are ideal for use over a longer period and during movement. Cameras are ideal for surveillance, as the images captured can be saved to a recording device or viewed on a remote monitor. This category also includes video imaging.

Night vision systems have come a long way since their early days of development. They are now used by law enforcement agencies and private investigators on a daily basis. They are also used by civilians for wildlife observation, security, surveillance, and personal entertainment. Night vision devices have become an integral part of the modern arsenal. Remember, not everything you see in the movies is make-believe.

asked What equipment should I start out with for ghost hunting?

I want to start ghost hunting, but can’t afford all the stuff I see on TAPS, what should I start out with first?

And got the following answer:

Camera: Nothing fancy with at least 400 speed film. 800 speed film seems to get the best results outside, and black and white is also something good to try. If you are more experienced photographer you may want to try infrared film. I have seen results from Polaroids but I suggest you only use these along with a 35 mm camera, so you can compare the results. If you use a digital camera make sure you have one with a good flash or a slave flash. I use a 35 mm camera, with automatic film advance, on investigations. I have used Fuji film primarily but I have also used Kodak and a department store brands with similar results. When you develop them you do not need to go to a camera shop, the local drug store or department store is fine. Let them know you want all the pictures developed “As Is”, so that you get the pictures that they might think are bad ones. These “bad ones” are normally your best ecto-mist photos.

Flashlight w/spare batteries: A common sense item. Remember to bring spare batteries for everything. Due to spirit activity, batteries often run down very fast and you do not want to miss anything because of dead batteries.

First Aid Kit: just in case, it’s very easy to trip in the dark and get cut.

Notebook w/pens and pencils: You need to write down and log in everything that happens. If you do not, then you really do not have much research information.

An example of this is one investigator gets a EMF reading that’s high and never writes it down. Another investigator takes a picture of the same area but is not aware of the reading and gets a anomalous image. Without that EMF reading the picture may be good evidence, but with a report noting the reading, the picture greatly increases in evidence value. Many investigators use a pocket tape recorder in stead and that is fine, just make sure you have spare batteries and tapes.

Jackets or weather appropriate clothes: If you are cold you are not at your best and your observation skill could suffer, pretty common sense.

Watch: You can log in the times of events and your arrival and departure.
Video camera(optional tripod): A regular camcorder can be used for video taping in lighted or day light conditions. The Sony line of camcorders has an infrared night shot feature that enables you to video tape in complete darkness and see beyond what the human eye can see.

Tape recorder w/external microphone and high grade tapes: You have to use a external microphone when recording EVPs (ghosts voices). If you rely on the internal microphone you will also be recording the internal gears and motors and this will make your tape worthless. Any sound you hear on the tape could not be used as evidence because of this, so use the external mic, they are pretty inexpensive. The type of tape that is most often recommended is high bias tapes or metal tapes.

Digital Audio Recorders: This recorder is small and easy to carry. You can also use the voice activation feature so there is less audio to review. I use this for my notes as well. Most units record the time of the recording as well which is very useful.

EMF Detector: These meters read the electromagnetic fields in an area. It is a common theory that spirits disrupt this field in such a way that you can tell one is present by higher than normal readings with this meter. There are many types and price ranges. You need to be aware of the natural readings in an area or building before you assume that your reading a ghosts presence. Make sure that you know where power lines, electrical line, major appliances and electronics are before you begin your readings with this useful and easy to use tool. You can try using a compass in place of this , the needle compass would move or shake when something was interfering with electromagnetic field the compass relies on the work properly.

Night Vision Scope:This tool may be useful in viewing some spirit activity It amplifies any existing light via the use of infrared. They are pricey and a good one can run into the 1000’s of dollars.

Cellular Phone: If you have one it can come in handy in case of an emergency.

Motion Detectors can be used to sense movements by often unseen forces or spirits. You can get battery operated ones for about 20 dollars and they are great for inside but I have seen them used successfully outdoors as well, just watch the placement. You don’t want a tree branch setting it off.

Thermometer or Thermal Scanner: You can use a digital thermometer that you can get for 25-50 dollars or spend a bit more to get a point and shoot thermal scanner. All of these are good for detecting cold spots that are often found in haunted places. I recommend using the thermal scanner guns in indoor areas because they shoot out a beam that reads the temperature of whatever it hits. It’s easier to keep track of areas indoors with this type. A regular digital or analog thermometer works better out side because it is detecting the air that is

Carlos Danger asked is night vision avaliable to citizens ?

And got the following answer:

Yes they are UNLESS local State Laws restrict them. California (The People’s Republic of) is one that has “restrictions”. Illinois; NOTHING is legal there. New York, and especially New York City (No guns are legal there and in Crack Cocaine Heaven, Washington DC).
If you are in the market to purchase one be prepared to PAY! These items are NOT Cheap. DO NOT buy a Generation 1 Night Vision unless it is Digital Night Vision! You will throw your money out the window. Save up and buy at least a Gen 2 or 3. They start around $1,000 to $3,000 FOR THE DISCOUNTED ONES!
Although I see that ATN has some GREAT DAY/NIGHT Scopes from $399 and up. They are Gen 1 and Gen 1+. The Gen 1, Digital Night Vision have 2 fields of view. Some are Green Hue and some are Black and White. So Good Luck!

Go to ATN and see if you can find a retail shop that recommends one. Research, research and then research! Be sure you can evaluate one so if it Sucks you can return it and try another one! Optical Planet web site is THE BEST. They have Professional People that can evaluate your specific needs and they don’t Pressure you into buying ANYTHING! By the way ATN is a Brand name which is made here in the USA. Get some Gun Magazines that periodically review IR Scopes. Don’t just use the Internet! It is Bias! A reference data base can and will give you the results through magazines publish.
Additionally, there are DAY Scopes, Combo DAY/NIGHT scopes, and or JUST NIGHT SCOPES. So be careful on what you purchase.

Mason asked Night Vision Camcorder……..?

Hi! I was looking for a night vision camcorder (preferably $400 or less)… I came across only one and it seemed to have mixed reviews… it was the Bell & Howell DNV16HDZ Full HD Rogue Night Vision Camcorder. I would like something similar if possible. Thanks for any suggestions!

And got the following answer:

Hi Mason:

The Bell & Howell camcorders, in general, get mixed reviews because just like Polaroid (which used to be a giant American corporation in the instant camera business) the Bell & Howell name mainly exists as part of a “brand management company” that licenses its trademark to various gadgets and appliances (and even luggage & desklamps) made by different manufacturers (mostly in China).

Bell & Howell is no longer the well-respected movie camera/movie projector & audio-visual company it was in the last century. (Polaroid gadgets are now pretty much junk, too, from my personal experience.)

So just having a known name-brand that “used to be great” is no assurance of current quality.

I know you enjoy the outdoors and are planning an upcoming backpack trip (from your recent Q&A discussions), and a night-vision camcorder would be a cool thing to take along.

Camcorders with infrared sensitivity (“night vision”) were a popular thing way-before the current fad of “Ghost Hunter” type TV shows came along, but some bad publicity with Sony’s NightShot camcorders being able to “see through clothes” caused most of the major brands to filter-out the IR sensitivity of their consumer models.

You can still find “NightShot” (Sony), “Super LoLux” (JVC), and “Night Mode” (Canon) features, just not many in your price range. These all require at least some infrared light source (or dim ambient light from the surroundings) to register an image.

Here’s a good article from last year, outlining popular camcorders with good IR sensitivity: A surprising entry in the article is the Funai pocket camcorder (model SV310FX1B) that’s under-$100.

True military-style night vision uses image multiplier tubes (a/k/a “star scopes” from their ability to see by mere starlight), and these sort of lens attachments for camcorders run into the thousands of dollars (like the Astroscope brand).

I know most of the camcorders with decent prices are mail-order/online-only, but I’m a big advocate of “try before you buy”. So read a few online articles like the one I linked to above (and do your own “night vision camcorders” search for reviews & prices) and make an informed decision within your budget.

To stretch your budget dollars, consider either a used NightShot model (I’ve had good luck on eBay) or shop places like Canon USA’s refurbished camcorders section on their website:

hope this helps,
–Dennis C.

Paranormal Research Expert asked Night vision cameras – purchase or make?

I have my own ghost investigation crew and I am only missing an infrared and a night vision camera / camcorder. Does anyone know where I can find one at an extremely reasonable price, or how to build / modify one? Please keep in mind when I say modify, I mean modify to actually perform like a full-fledged night vision or infrared camera. I’ve seen many Youtube videos, most are disappointing. But send me the links if you want anyway, cause maybe I haven’t seen them. Please include website links if you’d like as well. Thanks in advance guys!

And got the following answer:

1. Night vision
None of the affordable cameras will give a good quality image. The top range professional ones for police or military use are not much better. The sensors do not have high resolution. I have two, of which the best is a Russian one with a Maksutov mirror lens giving a 4x magnification when used as a visual scope. A digital camera mounted on it with the lens in line with the eyepiece (Look up digiscoping) provides the usual low quality images that all such scopes will give you. . .
Military version……. . . . . .
2 Infrared
You can buy infrared film for 35mm cameras and an infrared transmission filter to go over the lens.. The films are very expensive and good filters are very very expensive.
Digital cameras have an infrared blocking filter. Removing the blocking filters allows infrared onto the sensor. You will need an infrared transmission filter to block visible light and ultraviolet if you wish to use it in daylight or torchlight or candlelight or matchlight or moonlight.
I use 35mm infrared film for some astronomical and landscape photography. Landscape tonality can be breathtakingly beautiful with infrared film. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Corey Absher asked what scope should i get for my rifle?

i am getting a .17 cz455 rifle and im torn on what scope to using it to hunt rabbits in my backyard at about 60 to 100 yards.primarily i hunt at night with a flashlight.the two scopes i am thinking about are the Yukon Mini Varmint Hunter NVRS Titanium 1.5×42 Night Vision Riflescope or the Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Rimfire EFR Matte Rifle Scope.the night vision scope is 399 dollars it has a PULSE IR Illuminator by Yukon that will will reflect off the pupils of your prey up to 75 yards away making it easier to spot game at night.the leupold is 359 dollars and has lifetime warranty.i have read good reviews for both the night vision junk?should i stay with the trusty leupold and a maglight?or is the night vision with pulse infarred illuminator a bad to tha bone night hunting scope?help!

I agree. Leupold & light. I have a VX II 3x9x40 on my rifle & I LOVE it. When you look through it in low light, you’ll become a believer. You’re right, lifetime warranty, also it’s Made In The USA.
If you want a kickass flashlight that puts a mag light to shame, get a Streamlight brand Stinger or a Stinger DS LED. I have 3 of them, one at home, one at work, and one in my truck at all times. They will light up the whole side of my neighbor’s house….. 200 yards away.

Also Streamlight has lifetime warranty and Made In The USA.
They’re pricey, but worth it. I strongly suggest the DS LED with th C4 LED – most awesome light EVER.

Straight Shot asked eotech vs acog- law enforcement?

I know this topic has been discussed numerous times but I am still having trouble making up my mind. I have a bushmaster m4 with a irremovable carry handle that I would like to put either an eotech or an acog on. This is a department issued rifle and I do not have the option of putting on a flattop upper receiver.

I can see advantages to both types of sights. The eotech seems to have faster target acquisition which is important to me. The acog on the other hand does not require batteries and has the advantage of 4x magnification for longer shots.

The acog I am looking at is the TA31A which is designed and calibrated for mounting on a .223 carry handle. the only drawbacks I see to this scope are that it does not have as a fast of target acquisition at shorter ranges and it is more expensive.

I know that there are mounting systems to put an eotech on my carry handle but I have not found any reviews of how well that set up works. It looks like the sight is usually set in front of or towards the very front of the carry handle. Is it easy to aquire your target quickly with the sight that far forward? If anyone has used an eotech on a carry handle mount, do you like it?

I was also wondering how the two compare for shooting at night? I have a flashlight on my rifle and I will not be using night vision.

Any other points or observations that would be helpful are greatly appreciated.

I like the ACOG. I have one on my patrol rifle, mounted on the carry handle. I like it because it affords the longer shots. That’s where a patrol rifle sees it’s real action anyways right? At close range, entries and such, you’re essentially point shooting anyways right?

Inside of 30 feet, you don’t need to use the sights for a center mass hit. If you’re talking about CQC, then inside of 10 feet you certainly will not use the sight.

FYI on my background: Military and police. I have been shooting tactical rifle, open, urban and CQC for about 6 years. Hundreds and hundreds of hours of training. Have not had to pull the trigger on anyone yet.
