Birchwood Three gun 7 28 13 Stage 3 Tac optics shotgun

Q&A:

MortalGuardian asked What is the farthest range that a deer has been slayed with a shotgun?

Of course, it would be a slug that qualifies. Buckshot spreads and keeps spreading, and isn’t any good after a certain distance, like perhaps 75 or 100 yards. I am thinking that a sabot slug could kill a deer with one shot up to a fairly good distance- I don’t know- maybe 150 yards?

What is the farthest that someone has killed a deer with one shot using a shotgun?

And got the following answer:

Longest range?….. Who knows?…..

Smooth bore barrel with foster type (rifled slugs) is quite possible to 125 yards…… You have to be good and know your gun…..

Rifled barrel with sabot slugs and optics?… easily 200 yards as long as your well practiced….

Joseph asked What would be a good scope for my intentions?

I want to get into precision shooting. Just starting out. I’m not new at shooting all together just precision shooting. I shoot handguns, shotguns and my 2 AR’s often. I recently purchased a Remington 700 AAC-SD to start with. I done alot of reviewing online and purchased a Harris bipod, Weaver rail and Weaver 3 hole scope mounts. All I need now is a 30mm scope, whcih new mounts wouldnt be a problem. I’m looking into the Vortex Viper mil-dot scope and currently reviewing the Millet LRS-1. If I had a better rifle I’d just say screw it and get a Leupold MK4, which is under consideration still. But what would be a good mil-dot paralax scope for what I want to do for a good price?

And got the following answer:

I got to use a friend’s rifle a few weeks ago. It had a Nikon Prostaff 4-12X on it. It’s a fairly inexpensive scope, but the optics were very bright and clear. It seemed like a really high quality piece. Since you’re just starting, and you’re on a budget, it would be a good starting point. With that combination, it will take a lot of time before the rifle/scope combination is the limiting factor in your shooting. The next thing to do is work on load development. Reloading and precision shooting go hand-in-hand. Though most of my “precision” shooting is at 100 yards, it’s still a lot of fun for me to work up a load and compare it to the performance of others I’ve tried. This weekend I tested a few combinations and out of the exact same gun the groups ranged from 2″ down to just under .5″. The right load makes a huge difference.

Lou T asked What would be the best approach to hunting adirondack black bears?

Going to Northern New York w/ party of 6. Have 4 guys with rifles, two w/ shotguns. 8th lake area, early season hunt. We have a week so even time consuming techniques are welcome. Thanx. NO PETA PEOPLE ANSWERS PLEASE AS THE WORD KILL ONLY APPEARS ONCE.
Also: CANNOT USE BAIT AND WOULDN”T WANT TO ANYWAY.

And got the following answer:

this time of year bears are mostly feeding on grass and berries. Look for them on roads that are not very traveled where grass was planted to prevent erosion, in berry patches, or on south facing slopes. The look alot like stumps and you will need a good set of optics. Game calls will work this time of year also as no bear will pass on an easy meal. A fawn distress call is my favorite. The hard part about calling bears is not shooting other game animals that beat the bear to your set. In other words if you really want a bear don’t shoot the cougar that shows up first. The lion will spot you and leave. Keep calling and be patient all kinds of neat stuff comes crawling out of the woods for a fawn distress call. Primos is my favorite brand of calls. Follow the instructions on the box. Please be very carefull as bear hunting is very exiting and dangerous also. If you shoot a bear and it runs into the brush do not go running off through the brush after it. Wait at least a 1/2 hour and proceed real slow. The last thing you want to do is step on a pissed off wounded bear. Sounds stupid but with the sun going down in thick brush it is a possibility. So have fun be safe and good hunting.

Mike Hampton asked What is the difference between the long bead and short bead fiber-optic shotgun sights?

Can anyone recommend a good fiber-optic sight? I got a Remington 11-87 12 gauge for Christmas and I want to replace the white bead that comes on the gun.

And got the following answer:

FBI9400 asked How far can a TC encore 44 mag pistol shoot accurally. From how far can a person hit a 6″ group?

I live in the shotgun deer hunting zone of MN and we can use eather shotgun or hand guns of legal calaber. I have a TC encore pistol and want to buy a a barrel for deer hunting, and I cant deside which calaber to buy. I cant decide what to buy a rifle calaber or pistol cal. Any help would be nice.

And got the following answer:

I have a 44mag contender 10″ barrel, 357 max 15″ and Encore 454 12″ all for hunting…. (don’t ask why, I guess I’m just collecting). I zero my scopes for 75 yards. When you take a shot you must take into account several factors… how steady can you hold in that position…. if you are attempting to take a LONG shot, what is the wind doing? Have you shot in these type’s of conditions before… if so, you take the shot (knowing you can connect), if not you dont.

For me, if I’m in my stand where I have a rest for the pistol and shooting hand, I am comfortable shooting out to 150 yards with the 44 and the 454 barrels. In 357 max I load pointed bullets that shoot flatter and could shoot out to 200 yards if the conditions are right and my quarry is not moving.

Other wise if I’m walking around and don’t have a rest I would only shoot if I could hold steady enough to get the proper hit. Most likely 75 or less (depending on the size of deer and how much I was shaking… do to his size…). At the range on a sand bag rest I can shoot under 2″ groups with all of these barrels at 75 yards and have put them under 1″ more than once. So doing the math you could theoretically say that 6″ group are possible out to 225 – 450 yards but that would be a joke! In the field we don’t have sand bags:-)

If you are wanting to get into handgun hunting with a encore I would definitely look at the 460 S&W mag as you can shoot 454 and 45 colt in this barrel! And the 460’s very flat shooting out to 225 yards. (no, I have not fired one just read the test’s in gun magizines, and ballistics results in my load manuals)

In the end, if the 44 mag is your choice. It is more than capable, and will work well. I have dropped two deer with mine so far. Just buy good optics and you will have a great time. I use Burris scopes and have never had nor heard one any one have a problem with them losing zero (due to recoil punishment).
